Combine dates, soda, and boiling water.
chopped dates(1 c)baking soda(1 tsp)1-1/2 c boiling watershortening then add 1/4 c water up to 1 c line(3/4 c) - 2
Let cool.

Cream shortening then gradually add sugar, eggs, and vanilla.

Add flour and salt to shortening mixture alternating with the date mixture.

Pour into a greased 8 x 12 Pyrex baking dish.

Top with chopped walnuts and chocolate chips.

Bake at 375 for 45 minutes.
